In my new “Authentication 101” blog article, I explore the question of why hardware authentication, for example with a FIDO security key such as the iShield Key, is actually so attractive for companies. Finally, I will show why I believe that we will soon have an “all-rounder” with our iShield Key.

Starting point: multi-factor authentication

Whether private individuals or companies and their employees, they all want to secure their data and online applications and thus protect their digital identities. There are many ways to achieve this, which we have already discussed here several times. We are all familiar with multi-factor authentication (MFA). This authentication method uses several factors. The authentication process often begins by entering a password into an online service, such as Google & Co. The correctness of the password is confirmed.

Then we actually want to use the service, but there is a further authentication step to ensure that no unauthorized persons have gained access to the user data. There are various alternatives for this second authentication step, such as sending a confirmation code to another device, such as a cell phone. However, the variant with a hardware security key, such as an iShield Key MIFARE, is also becoming increasingly popular. If this is in your possession and is successfully used for identity verification, the corresponding service can be used.

Why is hardware authentication attractive for companies now?

This makes it clear that hardware authentication is a credible, reliable and, above all, secure element for protecting digital identities. Let’s take a look at the most important aspects for the use of FIDO Security Keys such as the iShield Key in companies and business environments.

Security and ease of use

With the iShield Key, you can log into or secure accounts or applications in no time at all with a tap or touch. Authentication is carried out via USB or NFC and no additional confirmation code, SMS or similar is required, as was previously the case. Authentication is quick and secure because the iShield Key and its credentials can be clearly assigned. It is predestined for use with accounts such as at the workplace (printers, canteens, online accounts, doors) or bank accounts or micropayments.

Hardware authentication is passwordless authentication

One point that must always be remembered: with hardware authentication, for example in the form of the iShield key, it is also clear that something like phishing or similar is avoided. The tapping of passwords in companies is prevented by FIDO Security Keys like the iShield Key and makes employees more resistant to phishing. At the same time, this means a great gain in security for the company and at the same time reduces considerable financial losses, for example through blackmail with data stolen in this way.

Hardware authentication is trustworthy and meets the highest security standards

It wasn’t long ago that we announced that we had entered into a strategic partnership with RSA and announced a phishing-resistant authentication solution. Together we will launch the new hardware security key series RSA iShield Key 2 powered by Swissbit. In combination with RSA® ID Plus, it is aimed at companies with the highest security requirements. The iShield Key 2 series developed by us meets the highest security standards and has FIDO2, PIV and HOTP support as well as a FIPS 140-3-certified smart chip.

Better than a real key: small, robust and shockproof

The iShield Key, depending on which one is used, is small and handy, so that it fits on a bunch of keys, for example, and fits easily in a trouser pocket or wallet. It is made for everyday use and can withstand water and knocks.

Like a real key, only cooler and more secure

The iShield Key is a small USB token that fits comfortably in your hand and doesn’t take up much space. In principle, it is like a real key, only a little lighter and cooler. You can pick it up and touch it. This haptic element in particular is a convincing argument for many users.

Will the iShield Key be the “all-rounder” among the FIDO Security Keys?

My answer to this question is quite clearly: Yes! The iShield Key is becoming increasingly attractive for companies because the technological component is becoming more and more important. The technical development of this FIDO Security Key is enormous.

You may have heard about it: we have expanded our iShield Key series in the past few days and launched the iShield Key MIFARE. The new FIDO2 Security Key is a true all-rounder!

It is no longer just about secure access to online services or the encryption of documents and code signing. Rather, it is now about secure physical access to buildings, authorization at wallbox stations, vending machines or printers as well as micropayments or advanced public transport systems. Apart from this, the iShield Key has long since supported NFC and is therefore also compatible with mobile devices

The future iShield Keys will be versatile security keys that meet the different requirements of various industries. And the best thing is: thanks to the “all-in-one” approach, we are significantly reducing integration costs for companies.

The next generation of iShield Keys will once again underline the fact that Swissbit has long since taken the technological lead in the FIDO security key sector and is focusing on the needs of the market.
